Bangplee (aka Bang Phli) Restaurants
In our village it is hard to get a variety of food. Besides the foreign teachers, there are only about 3 other non- Thai's in the area. This can make ordering food difficult because not many places
have English menus. We have two places we go to for dinner, Pee Pen or Soi 14. Although each place makes wonderful food we have recently tried two new places outside of the village on Theparak. I have no idea what the name of the first place we went to is because we told the taxi driver the name of the wat it is by, the word for restaurant, and it was a buffet. After a little confusion he got us there. This place charges 100 baht per person for buffet style fondue. They bring out a fondue pot where you make soup on the outer ring and cook all your meat on top. It was confusing at first and we really weren't sure how to go about making the soup, but it all turned out great. The food was great and we were all stuffed! Success.
The second place we tried was called Bai Mai Station and is a karaoke bar. Luckily, there wasn't a lot of karaoke going on when we got there because it turned out there was a wedding reception being held there! We were utterly confused when the host asked us if we were celebrating the wedding. They ended up seating us on the other side of the restaurant away from the wedding! We ordered two amazing dishes. Tom Kha Gai which is a coconut curry soup and Kao Ob
Sapparot which was fried rice with cashews and pineapple. Yum, yum, yum!
Bangkok Malls
There is nothing Thai people love more than shopping. I can't stress that enough. Here is a synopsis on the three malls I have recently spent time at in Bangkok. I'll start with Siam Paragon. Wow! It is a very beautiful designer mall that Lonely Planet describes as an Urban Playground. Most Thai people cannot afford to actually shop here with stores like Burberry and Cartier with the least expensive being Zara, which is still quite expensive for those being paid in baht. It seems like people go there just to hang out, watch one of the many fashion shows or modeling competitions that are bound to be going on, or see a movie. Being deprived from American food we fell in love with the lower level food area that had a gourmet grocery store, fresh bread, pastries, ice cream, etc.
Next up is Central World. This is a very short walk from Siam Paragon and is yet another huge mall. This is a great mall for us to shop at and had a few Western stores including Forever XXI. Dangerous. I have, of course, purchased a few things from there. I spent most of the day here on Saturday just wondering from store to store. This mall is still a little expensive for the baht, but not nearly as bad.
Emily got wind of a mall named Platinum from her hairdresser and she said it is where ALL the Thai people shop. We decided to go see what the fuss was about. She was right, ALL of the Thai people shop here. This place had the essence of a market, but was indoors. The stores were stalls where you would dig through garbage bags of clothes and then be forced to try them on over your clothes because there were no dressing rooms. The aisles were crowded and we were among the only white people there. I bought a pair of sandals, but we only stayed for about 30 minutes before we lost our minds and needed to regain a sense of personal space.
Khao San Road and Rambutri Road, Bangkok
We recently went out in Bangkok for our friend O'Brien's birthday. We started out on Rambutri Road which was a very pleasant and quiet area for Bangkok. The streets were cobblestone and full of Westerners, two things we don't see in Bangplee. After having dinner on Rambutri we headed to the infamous Khao San Road for a night of dancing. We went dancing at "The Club." Yes, it is called The Club.
